I’m no much of a writer but I’ve tried writing my own erotic fiction and some male mutual masturbation stories just for my own amusement. I’m a retired executive and have plenty of time on my hands. A lot of my stories seem to end up having the same characters and the settings aren’t particularly well-written. Any tips on how to improve? Michael

It’s great to hear from another writer!

One of the problems with focusing exclusively on male mutual masturbation stories is that a lot of the time things just go in the same direction. It’s such a narrow niche of interest for the audience. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a sense of déjà vu when writing a scene.

The secret, in my opinion, is diversifying the characters and the settings. The way they meet, the way they interact with each other, the places they go… all of this can make the story far more unique and exciting.

That’s probably what makes these stories more compelling than the short flash fiction you might find out there on adult literature sites.

Quite often a writer doing this as a hobby will get carried away with their own fantasy and not spend a lot of time building the characters, their motivations or the scenery around them. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s still a creative endeavour and should be applauded. I just think the real sauce in good male mutual masturbation stories comes with the details.

My top tip is to find images of potential characters, or base them on famous people. Use them as consistent references to develop descriptions.

Same with locations. Gather some photos of your chosen setting and select elements of them that you could include to set the scene and put the reader inside it with the characters.

You will probably be surprised how many little details you can discover and include to really pull the reader in. If you set your scene in a restroom, include the smell of urinal cakes or bleach. Add something about the graffiti on the walls. If your scene is a living room or bedroom, what art is on the walls and what does the floor feel like underfoot?
